An engine would have required the theatre to be much smaller, so it was pushed along by a steam tug, also called a pusher. The resulting theatre could hold approximately 1400 people. The National Ragtime Festival called it home for several decades in the 1960s-1980s. It was declared a national historic landmark in 1968, closed in 2001, sank in 2015 after the interior furnishings were removed, and finally caught fire and burned in October 2017.
